If you have been a bit removed from denturist students, you may not have made the connection that the school year was impacted by COVID-19. In March, students’ in person classes at NAIT were moved online and the practicum for third-year students came to an abrupt halt.
The College knows that NAIT has been working tirelessly to best serve the students and assist them in progressing through their year. Undoubtedly, the cohort with the most impact is those which were to graduate last month. Due to factors beyond anyone’s control this was not able to happen. The College is working with NAIT to ensure that once these students graduate, they will have timely access to the registration exam. The graduates may continue to work; however, after graduation but prior to receiving their exam marks while practicing on a provisional practice permit.
Until the time that they graduate, students, if not in a practicum course, may not perform restricted activities in a denturist environment. This includes those students who are between first and second or second and third years or at any point through out the school year when not actively enrolled in and practicing as part of a practicum course. This is a legal interpretation of our current legislation keeping public safety at the forefront.
Happily, last week, NAIT was able to confirm that the third-year students will be able to return to NAIT for their last classes from July 6-17. Once graduated, they will be eligible to apply for a provisional practice permit with which they may perform all restricted activities under the supervision of a regulated denturist.
In working with the University of Alberta, the College’s registration exam is tentatively scheduled for October 2-3, 2020.
