Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation

Canadian anti-spam legislation (CASL) was put into place in 2014 to protect consumers and businesses from the misuse of digital technology, including spam and other electronic threats. CASL was created to reinforce best practices in email marketing and combat spam and related issues. These issues include identity theft, phishing and the spread of malicious software, such as viruses, worms and trojans (malware). The legislation has made a positive difference. When CASL took effect in 2014, Canada was home to seven of the world’s top 100 spamming organizations. By 2017, there were only two.[1]

As a regulatory body, we are required, by law, to provide regulatory information to our members and the public.  In 2019, this is primarily through email.  Email not only expedites the message but saves resources in the meantime.  The College will always send you regulatory news, but we need your permission to provide you information that is non-regulatory in nature.  This would most likely be providing you information on continuing education opportunities.

To allow us to send you the non-regulatory information, we need your permission.  You will notice on your renewal form this fall, that we ask that you give your consent for the College to provide this information to you. Please know that the College will not be sending anything and everything to you but will carefully screen the information and sources to ensure that you are getting current and relevant information.

For further information on CASL, please visit https://www.fightspam.gc.ca/eic/site/030.nsf/eng/home. For questions about the CASL declaration at renewal, please contact the College.
