Health Information Act Modernization

Amendments to modernize the Health Information Act (HIA) and the Health Information Regulation (Regulation) were proclaimed on June 22, 2026.

The HIA establishes rules for the collection, use, disclosure, access, protection, and management of health information in Alberta. The changes reflect evolving health information practices and support team-based care, governance of shared health information, privacy, and data-driven innovation.

The amendments may affect how members manage and safeguard health information within their practice. Members are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the legislative changes and review their policies, procedures, and practices to ensure they remain compliant with the HIA.

Resources are available on the Government of Alberta website linked here, which further directs you to HIA Fact Sheets providing high-level information on the changes.
