National Exam? But we're different in Alberta...

It was shared with the membership earlier this year, that the College will be moving to a collaborative, national examination with other provincial denturist regulators.  This progression, as approved by Council, has many advantages for the profession and the College. This will uphold the integrity of the profession by setting a clear standard for the practice of denturism in Canada.

One question that the College has heard since this announcement, is how the differing provincial scopes of practice are represented with this common exam?

What is important to understand is that the exam, as we know it, is based on the national competency profile.  This profile does not have province-specific items and so the exam currently doesn’t address the differences in scope.

Going forward, the College will be addressing these scope differences through the accreditation process.  The program accreditation that will be performed by EQual Canada at denturist programs in Alberta is also based on the national competency profile.  However, the accreditation process also permits provincial regulators to require additional, province-specific competencies be addressed by the educational programs.  It is through this mechanism that the College will be able to be assured that Alberta graduates meet the acceptable Alberta standards and scope.
