When someone has graduated from an approved program and do not yet have their successful exam results, and they want to work in the field of denturism, they must have a provisional practice permit. This requirement has been in place since 2002.
Let’s unpack what this means:
According to Council policy, an approved program is one that has current accreditation from the EQual program of Accreditation Canada. These graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the College through the general route.
It is important to make the distinction that working in denturism is not confined to working with patients. Yes, this is also denturism, but not the only aspect. Is someone who has graduated works in the lab only, they are still practicing as a denturist. This is defined in the Health Professions Act.
What this means is that if you have a graduate working in your clinic/lab after they graduate, they must be registered with the College as a provisional denturist.
A provisional denturist can do everything that a denturist on the general register can do, except that they are working under the supervision of a denturist on the general register. Someone can be on the provisional register for up to a year and as soon as they pass the exam, within this year, they are automatically placed on the general register.
All graduating students are informed of this information before they graduate. If there are any questions about this requirement please do not hesitate to contact Dacia at drichmond@abdenturists.ca.
