Registration Renewal

It’s renewal time again!  Pursuant to the Health Professions Act (HPA), the Denturists Profession Regulation and the College Bylaws, those who wish to continue to practice as a denturist in Alberta next year are required to make application for the renewal of their practice permit. Please remember that the practice of denturist is not restricted to providing direct patient services, but includes any of the following:

  • designing, constructing, repairing, altering and fitting any complete or partial denture for the purpose of restoring and maintaining function and appearance;
  • teaching, managing and conducting research in the science, techniques and practice of denturism; or
  • providing restricted activities authorized by the regulations.

When do I renew?

The renewal window is open from October 1, 2019 to November 30, 2019.  Those renewing during this time frame will be required to complete the online portion of the renewal and pay the required fees for 2020.  You will have noticed that we have updated our systems and regulatory outlook!  This will make not only your navigation of the website and your College profile easier and more intuitive but switches the professional responsibility of being in compliance with your regulatory responsibilities back to you, the member.  Please remember that the renewal form is a legal document and is binding.  Any omissions or falsifications may have impact on your registration as a denturist.

Renewal fees for 2020 have increased over past years. In spite of increasing costs for running the business of the College and professional conduct, the College has not had a net increase in fees since its inception.  As a result, we are having to increase them now by a larger amount than we would like to.  For 2020, practice permit fees for general and provisional regulated members will be $2550.00.  This is payable at the time of renewal – preferably by credit card (VISA or MasterCard) or e-transfer.  A registration renewal will not be approved until the College has received the required fees.

What are my regulatory responsibilities?

There are three main areas in which the College expects regulated members to be compliant.

  • Professional liability insurance

It is a requirement of registration as a regulated health professional in Alberta to have professional liability insurance (PLI) at a level prescribed by Council. The College will not be providing the service of brokering your PLI for 2020.  This gives you flexibility to attain your own insurance. There are organizations, such as the Denturists Association of Alberta, which have a comprehensive policy available to you.  You must have PLI prior to completing your renewal as you must attest to it during the renewal process.

  • Continuing Competence Program

It is a requirement of the legislation that all members be compliant with the Continuing Competence Program (CCP) in order to renew their practice permit.  You will be asked to declare that you are in compliance for the current year (i.e., 2019) when completing your renewal for 2020.

  • Currency of practice

As per policy, all members must retain currency of practice.  What this means is that within the immediately preceding five years, a denturist must have logged at least 1200 practice hours of denturism to be considered current.

New graduates and provisional members may not have this yet.  Contact the College if you have questions about your currency.

What if I don’t renew within the renewal window?

The renewal window closes at 11:59 p.m. on November 30, 2019.  Those who have not yet renewed will be subject to an additional administrative fee.  All renewals must be approved by the Registrar in order to have a valid practice permit on January 1, 2020.  Members are reminded that the College will be closed over the holiday season and processing times will be slower.

Pursuant to the HPA, those who have not renewed by December 1, 2019, will receive a 30 day notice of cancellation of their practice permit.

What if I don’t renew by December 31, 2019?

Your practice permit will be cancelled, and you cannot practice. You will be given a 7 day grace period by which time you can complete your renewal with an additional administrative fee.  If you do not complete your renewal by this time, and you wish to continue practice, you will be required to complete a new application for registration. You will not be permitted to practice while the application is in process and until it is approved by the Registrar.
