Recently, a denturist reached out with a question about using Meta-style smart glasses in practice, specifically, devices that can record video and audio during patient appointments and use artificial intelligence (AI) to process information. Because this type of technology is becoming more common, we wanted to share the key points with all members.
First and foremost, as custodians under the Health Information Act, denturists must complete a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) through the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (OIPC) before introducing any technology that collects, uses, and stores patient health information. Smart glasses fall squarely into that category.
These devices can capture much more information than is required for patient care, which means your obligations around collection, use, and retention are front and centre. You must limit what you collect, ensure you have a clear purpose for using the technology, and put safeguards in place.
If you choose to use recording or AI-enabled tools during appointments, informed consent is mandatory. Patients need to know:
This discussion must be clear, and the consent must be documented.
It is also important to clarify what AI can and cannot do. AI tools cannot diagnose. If the device highlights something or produces a summary, you must verify the information yourself and rely on your own professional judgment. The same expectation applies to any AI-generated clinical notes, impressions, or recommendations. You remain responsible for reviewing and validating all content before using it.
Because Alberta does not yet have legislation specific to AI in healthcare, the safest approach is to proceed cautiously, stay grounded in existing laws and standards, and ensure patient privacy remains a priority.
If you’re thinking about implementing AI-enabled tools in your practice, we encourage you to review our full AI guidance and begin with the PIA process through the OIPC. These steps will help ensure any new technology is used safely, responsibly, and in compliance with your obligations.
