You Asked, We Answered: Oral Appliances for OSD, OSA, and OAT

Can denturists provide oral appliances for patients/clients with sleep apnea or other sleep‑related breathing concerns?

This is a question the College hears often and the answer is nuanced.

Obstructive sleep disorders (OSD), including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), are medical conditions that must be diagnosed by a physician. Denturists do not diagnose OSD or OSA, interpret sleep studies, or independently prescribe oral appliance therapy. Those activities fall outside the denturist scope of practice.

So where do denturists fit in?

Denturists play an important supportive and collaborative role as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team. With appropriate education, training, and competence, denturists may provide care related to oral appliance therapy when it has been properly prescribed by an authorized healthcare professional. This includes but not limited to the fabrication and provision of prescribed oral appliances, such as mandibular advancement devices, within the boundaries of professional standards and legislation.

What’s the key takeaway?

Denturists must work collaboratively, stay within scope, and ensure all care related to OSD and OSA is based on a valid medical diagnosis and prescription. Clear communication, appropriate documentation, and adherence to College expectations help protect patients/clients and your practice.
