Submitted by the College of Dental Technologists of Alberta
Section 46(1)(ii) of the Health Professions Act (HPA), mandatory registration, requires that all individuals who intend to manufacture dental appliances that are used by other regulated members to provide professional services directly to the public be registered with a Regulatory College. Meaning that, all individuals engaged in the manufacture of dental appliances must be regulated members of a regulatory college under the HPA.
The profession of Dental Technology is regulated by the same Legislation and in the same manner as the professions of Dentistry, Denturism, Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting.
Section 47(1) of the HPA states that no person shall knowingly employ a person who meets the requirements of Section 46(1) unless that individual is a regulated member. The HPA does not allow regulated members of other oral health professions, for example Denturists, to supervise the unregulated individuals engaged in the manufacture of dental appliances. Anyone who knowingly employs a person in contravention of the HPA is guilty of an offense.
