Do you provide teeth whitening services?

The Alberta Personal Services Regulation and Standards apply to your denturist practice if you offer tooth whitening. This is identified as a personal service under the legislation. As a result, denturists who provide this service must ensure that they are complying with the applicable legislation and standards.

This legislation and standards apply to most practice settings; however, there are exceptions. These exceptions include:

• when the service is provided in an approved hospital or accredited facility, and
• on premises where dentists practice dentistry.

If you are a practice owner who provides teeth whitening services or will be providing this in the future, and an exemption listed above does NOT apply, you are required to notify Alberta Health Services. To do so, you must complete and submit the Personal Services Notification Form.

The Regulation and Standards establish minimum health and safety requirements for the personal services industry. Please ensure you are familiar and are in compliance with these requirements in addition to the College Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics and guidance documents.

• Personal Services Standards: support the regulation by establishing detailed operational requirements for protecting public health.
