Examination Update - where are we at?

The College hosted another administration of the registration exam in June.  The exam consists of both the multijurisdictional multiple-choice component (MCQ) and the Alberta-specific objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). There were 19 candidates for the MCQ and 24 for the OSCE. The candidates represented two educational programs and included both initial writes and repeats. Each eligible candidate currently has the privilege of attempting each component a maximum of three times. Results for the exam administration will become available in the next few weeks.

The College continues to work with the other Canadian denturist regulators to “nationalize” the registration examinations to create one standard. This common standard will serve the profession and the public well in ensuring common expectations across the country. While a few provinces have already adopted this new process, some are “stuck” with outdated legislation that they are working on to allow them to join. Others are still in discussion.

The multijurisdictional MCQ was first administered in June 2021. It is administered by remote proctoring. What this means is that the candidates take the exam from home, through a computer link and are actively monitored throughout the examination. We have had very smooth administrations using this process and it works well for the candidates, especially those that have to travel to Edmonton for the OSCE.

Work has begun on harmonizing the OSCE as well from a national perspective. Working with our psychometricians and accreditor, the multijurisdictional OSCE is scheduled to launch in June 2025. We will be calling for volunteers to help with aspects of this process so watch your email for opportunities.

Should you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to reach out to the College.
